Frequently Asked Questions

Being a new parent to any youth hockey program can be a bit intimidating, but here at Affton we do everything we can to make everyone feel at home to make the transition as smooth as possible.  The following is a compilation of the questions we get asked the most by new parents.

Affton Hockey holds tryouts for teams in our more competitive programs, such as the Central States Developmental Hockey League. Spots on these teams are not guaranteed and players may be cut both during and at the completion of tryouts.

Evaluations are held for ADM and Affton Hockey Youth League teams. Players are evaluated and placed on the appropriate level team based on their skills. All players with adequate skills are guaranteed a spot on a team or will be referred to our Learn to Play Program.

Yes. We ask that players make every effort to attend all tryouts and evaluations. This gives our evaluators the chance to see every player in multiple situations and helps us place players on the appropriate team for their age and skill level.

When you arrive at the first tryout or evaluation, enter the warming room to check in and get your player’s tryout number. Your player should wear this number to every tryout or evaluation. This is how our evaluators identify the skaters.

Yes. Goalies should attend all evaluations so that the evaluators may see him or her facing shots from the other players in drills and scrimmages. At most levels there also is an additional goalie-specific evaluation that includes all goalies from that age group along with a few skaters invited to serve as shooters.

Affton Hockey Youth League players (10U Squirt through 14U Bantam) are required to purchase a set of Affton Hockey home and away jerseys and socks. Fittings are held by FiveB Designs, Affton Hockey’s uniform provider. Fittings for youth hockey uniforms typically are held in July or August prior to evaluations to ensure delivery for the start of the season. Jerseys for players in our Mite ADM program are provided by Affton Hockey through team sponsorships. Fittings for ADM typically are held during evaluations. Affton Hockey supplies jerseys to players in our Learn to Play and Midget AA programs.

When purchasing equipment, keep in mind that Affton Hockey Youth League players (10 U Squirt level and above) are required to wear red pants and white helmet.
